{"id":1468,"date":"2020-06-30T00:37:43","date_gmt":"2020-06-30T00:37:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fousquaremultiplycentral.contraststaging.com\/?p=1468"},"modified":"2020-10-23T22:05:06","modified_gmt":"2020-10-23T22:05:06","slug":"brad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/foursquaremultiply.org\/fr\/brad\/","title":{"rendered":"Are you reaching the people that you got in this for?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-column-has-shadow fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><p>I was recently asking a group of leaders to tell me about various \u2018social mosaics\u2019 that exist in their cities.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>These leaders lit up as they brainstormed all of the various groups of people who gather in groups throughout their communities &#8211; cycling clubs, PTAs, surfers, bikers, and artists.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They rattled off dozens of groups where people who are far from Jesus could be found.<\/p>\n<p>Then, I asked them what their social mosaic was. Where do you hang out? Which of these groups are you a part of?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The room fell silent.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One brave leader shook his head in disgust and said, \u201cchurch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And we wonder why we aren\u2019t seeing more people come to Christ.<\/p>\n<p>See the problem is this, the more secular, the more urbanized, and the newer the city and community, the less our traditional behaviors around \u2018evangelism\u2019 work.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In an increasingly secularized society we find more and more that \u2018getting them to church\u2019 isn\u2019t as simple as it once was.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Just a decade ago, you could invite a new acquaintance to church and have them hear a quality band followed by an evangelistic message, and somehow, they\u2019d respond. Today the visits are few and far between, and the decisions, even fewer.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Our knee jerk reaction is tweak the service, improve the experience, or hire a staff member who has a tat. But until we recognize our disconnect from our surrounding culture, we will never penetrate it with the Gospel.<\/p>\n<p>The explanation for our disconnect is not our programs or the quality of our services.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is our ignorance.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We have a shallow understanding of the secular mind.<\/p>\n<p>In the mid 70\u2019s, (yes, that long ago), James Engel helped develop a way of representing the journey from complete atheist to committed Christ follower. It unpacks the <i>process<\/i> of conversion, and the various decision-making steps that a person goes through before they become a Christian.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It can be best understood this way:<\/p>\n<p>-8 Awareness of supreme being, no knowledge of Gospel<\/p>\n<p>-7 Initial awareness of Gospel<\/p>\n<p>-6 Awareness of fundamentals of Gospel<\/p>\n<p>-5 Grasp implications of Gospel<\/p>\n<p>-4 Positive attitude towards Gospel<\/p>\n<p>-3 Personal problem recognition<\/p>\n<p>-2 Decision to act<\/p>\n<p>-1 Repentance and faith in Christ<\/p>\n<p>New birth<\/p>\n<p>+1 Post-decision evaluation<\/p>\n<p>+2 Incorporation into Body<\/p>\n<p>+3 Conceptual and behavioral growth<\/p>\n<p>+4 Communion with God<\/p>\n<p>+5 Stewardship<\/p>\n<p>Now, many have debated the nuance of each of these points and defined them a bit differently, but what no one disagrees with is the reality that there are roughly 8 stages that precede a person ever becoming a Christ follower.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Ask yourself where the church spends all of it\u2019s time, and you start to unpack the deep seeded sickness in the church today.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Our scorecards and celebrations completely ignore the tremendous victory it is for someone to move from stage 8 to stage 7.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What\u2019s even more devastating is the fact that in a secular culture people are moving further away.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>More and more people live at a -9.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They aren\u2019t even certain God is reality. It takes very little analysis to recognize why simply inviting someone to church won\u2019t work the way we think.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This should challenge our understanding of the \u2018activity\u2019 of the local church.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In a secular culture, where are we putting our energy? Who are we reaching?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This should be especially challenging to us as leaders.<\/p>\n<p>I heard one prominent leader describe one of the \u2018pre-decision\u2019 stages as, \u201cThey need to realize that not all Christians are idiots.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Well, if that\u2019s true, where will they discover that? In a church service? At a Bible study?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Or, will they discover it when they realize that this man or woman they\u2019ve been sitting next to in an art class, or getting to know in a bike club, or hiking with on Saturday, or serving the neighborhood alongside of, is not only intelligent and kind, but also a Christ follower.<\/p>\n<p>Do you see the secular thinker in the complex manner in which they deserve to be understood?
